  1. An election is a stable, negatively charged 
  2. elementary particle. It is a constituent of 
  3. all atoms, and a member of the class of 
  4. particles known as leptons. The electrons in 
  5. each atom surround the nucleus in groupings 
  6. called shells. In a neutral atom the number 
  7. of electrons is equal to the number of 
  8. protons in the nucleus. This electron 
  9. structure is responsible for the chemical 
  10. properties of the atom. Electrons are the 
  11. basic particles of electricity. Each carries 
  12. a charge of 1.602192 × 10-19 coulomb, and all 
  13. electrical charges are multiples of this 
  14. quantity.
